L'AUTEUR Sonia Pelletier A history and geography
teacher in Alsace, Sonia
Pelletier-Gautier is mostly
inspired by her university
researches in medieval and
regional history to
outline a
very accurate picture of the
Germanic Roman Empire Society
at the awakening of Rhenan
humanism.
Rich with archaeological and
museum experiences, she also
published a number of articles
in newspapers and historical
magazines, taking part, as
well, in collective works,
such as the dictionary of
Alsacian biographies.
On top of that, her thesis was
awarded a prize by the
“Conseil Général du Haut
Rhin”, and published,
warranted by the “Société
Savante” of Eastern Regions.
Mixing up Rhenan forgotten of
famous actors with fiction but
credible characters, she
restores from the past the
fear of inquisition to
stimulate her contemporaries’
thinking about vanity of
certainties at a time that
could be theirs.

Face aux malheurs des hommes,
entre doutes et certitudes,
un Inquisiteur en quête de vérité.
June 1490. Christine Fritz confessed her heresy, but the question remains the same: is she sincere, or did she yield to the Inquisition law court pressure? No matter what, her fate is sealed: her judge, Ulrich Bichwiller, has completed his task, hands the guilty one over to laic authorities.Gradually losing its landmarks, the Fritz family breaks up, each one following one’s own destiny at times a tragic one, at times having some kind of hope. What is Emeline going to do, finding a home-place in the shadow of Teutonic knights? What will become of Petronille and her fiancé Margnart Hesser? Will Thibaut come back from his pilgrimage to Compostella? Will a plague epidemic isolate Guebwiller, with its series of slanders and cruelties, like very often in the Middle Ages, they try to escape fears and resentments by pointing out scapegoats: the witch, the Jews, the leprous then become ideal targets. Ulrich Bichwiller haunted by the trial, is at war with his own conscience; he is searching for his truth from Strasbourg to Köln, in quest of a divine signal which always escapes him. Tortured by the brand-new ideas on the one hand, and the Church tradition on the other, how will he react faced with “the plagues of God”, that permeate his time? Will he know how to serve the others, then despising honours and power? Those characters in search of the truth give life to the third and last volume of the “Inquisitor’s Dilemmas”, which ends up with an unexpected outcome, thus revealing a number of mysteries.
