L'AUTEUR

Sonia Pelletier

A history and geography teacher in Alsace, Sonia Pelletier-Gautier is mostly inspired by her university researches in medieval and regional history to outline a very accurate picture of the Germanic Roman Empire Society at the awakening of Rhenan humanism. Rich with archaeological and museum experiences, she also published a number of articles in newspapers and historical magazines, taking part, as well, in collective works, such as the dictionary of Alsacian biographies. On top of that, her thesis was awarded a prize by the “Conseil Général du Haut Rhin”, and published, warranted by the “Société Savante” of Eastern Regions. Mixing up Rhenan forgotten of famous actors with fiction but credible characters, she restores from the past the fear of inquisition to stimulate her contemporaries’ thinking about vanity of certainties at a time that could be theirs.

Une ville médiévale du Saint Empire romain germanique : une atmosphère de suspicions sur fond de sorcellerie au XVe siècle

November 1489. The Guebwiller Dominicans greet inside their walls the provincial Teutonic priest, Jacques Sprenger, the famous theoretician and practitioner of Inquisition. Specially coming from Köln, he entrusts Ulrich Bichwiller with the following mission: to confound Christine Fritz, one of the “Pas du Lévrier” inkeeper’s six daughters, that rumour accuses of withcraft, a new heresy at the end of the century.
Guebwiller is a very quiet town which way of living is paced with religious offices and celebrations, with dynamic economic and commercial activities but at the same time, is a permanent victim of bad weather, starvation and epidemics. Ulrich Bichwiller is about to use all means at his disposal to fulfil his mission, and also manages and solves all internal problems connected with his monastery.
Meanwhile the Fritz family, very busy with the wedding ceremony of Marie, their eldest daughter, doesn’t in the least suspect the hell  they are threatened with.
The Dominican priest is patiently bearing his cloth and preparing a spectacular trial. Will Ulrich Bichwiller be able to meet his superior’s demands together with observing his own principles of integrity and honesty? May Christine Fritz whose behaviour generate doubts, be innocent?
The first volume of the trilogy of the “Inquisitor’s dilemmas” strictly meets historical information. This volume is based on the parallel development of those two ways of living aimed at confronting each other. This trial is opening on a period of disorders Middle Ages were used to and had the talent of overcome in the name of a triumphant Church.
